Hosting and server logs

fuelglance.com runs on a server operated by Hetzner Online GmbH, Industriestraße 25, 91710 Gunzenhausen, Germany. The server is located in the Helsinki data centre (Finland). Hetzner processes the data as a processor; no data is transferred to countries outside the EU.

For every request, the web server logs the IP address, date and time, HTTP method and requested path (without URL parameters), HTTP status code, amount of data transferred and the browser identifier (user agent). The logs are used solely for secure and stable operation and to detect errors and attacks. They are rotated daily and deleted automatically after 8 days at the latest; they are not combined with other data sources. If the server rejects a request as invalid (for example because it is too large) or a server error occurs, an error log is also written containing the IP address, the full request including URL parameters and the referring page; it is deleted on the same schedule.

The legal basis is our legitimate interest under Art 6(1)(f) GDPR (security and availability of the website). Without this connection data the website cannot be delivered.

Loading price data

When you open or reload a fuelglance page, the fuelglance server loads prices, stations and history from the spritpreisverlauf.at interface, which is also operated by Christoph Salat on the same server, and delivers the finished page. This request contains no data about you – no IP address, cookies or browser information – only which data is needed (such as country, region, station and period). Within the open page, for example when you change the period or search again, your browser loads further data directly from the interface. Your IP address and standard browser information are transmitted for technical reasons, but no search terms, location coordinates or saved stations.

These requests are logged and deleted as described above; here an error log is also written when the interface rejects a request because of too many requests. Technical errors of the interface are recorded with the self-hosted software GlitchTip, without IP addresses or user data.

The legal basis is our legitimate interest under Art 6(1)(f) GDPR (providing the displayed data and preventing abuse).

Exchange rates from the European Central Bank

Whenever prices are converted into another currency, for example in the country comparison or with a chosen display currency, reference rates from the European Central Bank are used (data-api.ecb.europa.eu; Sonnemannstraße 20, 60314 Frankfurt am Main, Germany). When you open or reload a page, the fuelglance server obtains them; the ECB only receives our server’s address and no data about you. For further conversions within the open page, your browser loads the rates directly from the ECB. The ECB receives your IP address and standard browser information for technical reasons, but no information about which prices or stations you are viewing. The ECB is itself responsible for this processing.

The legal basis for this integration is our legitimate interest under Art 6(1)(f) GDPR (correct conversion of the displayed prices).

Settings, cookies and local storage

fuelglance does not use advertising or tracking cookies. Only when you explicitly choose a language or currency is that choice stored in the cookie “fuelglance-language” or “fuelglance-currency” for up to one year. Without an explicit choice, the language determined at the start of your visit is kept only while the page is open and is not stored permanently. The web server neither evaluates nor logs these cookies.

Stations you save are stored as station identifiers in your browser’s local storage (localStorage). They do not leave your browser. No account is created. If the page reloads itself once after a fuelglance update, it briefly keeps its current state (such as language and saved stations) in the browser’s session storage (sessionStorage), which is cleared when the tab is closed.

This storage is strictly necessary for the function you explicitly requested (§ 165(3) of the Austrian Telecommunications Act 2021); the legal basis is Art 6(1)(f) GDPR. You can unsave stations at any time or delete the site data in your browser.

Automatic country and language selection

When you open the main address fuelglance.com, the country is estimated locally in your browser from its time zone setting, and the language from your browser language or else the country. Neither the time zone nor the browser language is transmitted or stored for this; neither your IP address nor GPS is used. Direct links to a country or language are not redirected.

Location search

Your browser only asks for your location when you click “My location” and grant permission. Coordinates are processed solely in your browser to filter the station list that has already been loaded; they are neither transmitted to us or third parties nor stored. You can revoke the permission in your browser settings at any time.

A search within the open page also filters the station list locally in your browser. The search term does, however, appear in the address bar (?q=…) and therefore in your browser history. When such an address is opened or reloaded, the fuelglance server filters the station list with the search term and delivers the result. The search term is not passed on to the spritpreisverlauf.at interface, not recorded in the access log (which contains no URL parameters) and not stored; only if the server rejects the request or a server error occurs does it appear in the error log described above.

Web analytics (Umami)

To understand how fuelglance is used and to improve it, we use the open-source software Umami. We run it ourselves on a server rented from Hetzner Online GmbH in Nuremberg (Germany); for this, your browser loads a script from stats.fuelglance.com and sends the information listed below there. Umami sets no cookies, stores no information on your device (not even in local storage) and reads no identifiers from it. Consent under § 165(3) of the Austrian Telecommunications Act 2021 is therefore not required.

Only the following is recorded: address and title of the page viewed (without URL parameters and fragment, and therefore without search terms), the previously visited page (referrer, also without URL parameters), browser, operating system, device type, screen size, browser language, the approximate location derived from the IP address (country, region and city), the time, and the use of individual functions: selected fuel, period, region or comparison country, clicks on search results and on the directions link, starting a search, starting a nearby search and the number of stations it finds, and the CSV download. For these functions, only fixed selection values and counts are transmitted, no search terms, location coordinates or free text. As with every request, the address of the page you are on is included; on a station page, it contains that station’s identifier.

Your IP address is not stored. It is only processed briefly to determine the approximate location and, together with the browser identifier, to calculate a pseudonymous session identifier that includes a secret value changing every month. This identifier is stored with the statistics; however, visits cannot be linked beyond the respective calendar month, and individual visitors cannot be identified. The statistics server keeps no access log; only technical errors may produce an error log containing the IP address, which is continuously overwritten.

The statistics are not deleted automatically; we keep them in this form, without IP addresses, indefinitely. Hetzner processes the data as a processor; beyond that, the data is neither passed on to third parties nor transferred to countries outside the EU.

The legal basis is our legitimate interest under Art 6(1)(f) GDPR (statistical analysis of usage to improve fuelglance). If “Do Not Track” is enabled in your browser, the script sends no data. You can also prevent the recording by blocking scripts from stats.fuelglance.com, for example with a content blocker, or object to the processing as described below.

Beyond this, fuelglance uses no advertising networks and no error monitoring in the browser. Apart from the Umami script, fonts and scripts are loaded exclusively from fuelglance.com.

Directions via Google Maps

The directions link on station pages opens Google Maps in a new tab and passes on the station’s address, not your location. Google is only contacted once you click; from then on, Google’s privacy policy applies.

Your rights

You have the right of access (Art 15 GDPR), rectification (Art 16 GDPR), erasure (Art 17 GDPR), restriction of processing (Art 18 GDPR) and data portability (Art 20 GDPR). Please contact christoph@salat.tech. Since nothing is stored apart from the short-lived server logs and the statistics described above, which contain no IP addresses, it is generally not possible to link data to you. There is no automated decision-making or profiling.
